Using Internet Technology to Survey Canadians

(PRWEB) November 18, 2005 -- The Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) is sponsoring a unique and independent online survey which will identify what Albertans value most about their forest resources. It will also identify what balance Albertans want between sustainable economic, environmental and social forest usage. Survey results will help the forest industry, and other stakeholders, improve sustainable forest practices. The survey is conducted by Cambridge Strategies Inc and TheWebVideo.com.

INNOVATIVE SURVEY METHOD
The survey uses a Discrete Choice Modeling method - for which Daniel L. McFadden was awarded the 2000 Nobel Prize in economics. The method used for the survey asks people to make choices between competing scenarios. The scenarios are not optimal but the choices made by each respondent uncover the dominant values participants ascribe to the usage of their forest resources. Discrete Choice modeling is an advanced data analysis techniques used in this case to investigate what features a new public and industrial policy should have and how it should implemented.

USING THE VIRAL POWER OF THE INTERNET
Efforts are being made to engage a wide a cross section of Albertans through traditional media, email contact and internet promotion. Direct contact is being made with a wide array of Albertans, including economic, business, environmental, recreational, conservation, community, business, social and political groups throughout the province. Participants are approached as citizens who need to consider the future use of their forest as a public asset. They are asked to forward the survey website link to their own network of contacts. The goal is to enable as many Albertans as possible to contribute their input through the internet survey.

Online interviewing is a powerful, affordable platform, says Julien Lambert, Producer with TheWebVideo.com. This type of market research includes advanced interviewing features and data export options that researchers need. The integrated approach that we use to make people aware of the survey allows for a broader and more in-depth reach of the population, Lambert says.
